Osimhen Can Break Yekini’s Goals Record Says Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, one of Nigerian greatest strikers ever to play in the Premier League, is optimistic that Lille striker will be one of the world’s finest.

The 37-year-old former Middlesbrough striker said that he sees no reason why Victor Osimhen can’t surpass the goal record set by the legendary Rashidi Yekini.

The Yak’ is third on the list behind Yekini and Segun Odegbami, who found the net 22 times for the three African champions, on the all-time goal list for the Super Eagles.

While Speaking with Goal, Ex- Nigerian International said “Records are meant to be broken,”

“He can if given the chance to play, and I hope they can let him play in the Super Eagles for more years.

“After he has played for three to five years, Nigerians will say things like ‘he’s old, we’re looking for younger players.

In nine appearances Osimhen has registered four goals since he debuted for Gernot Rohr’s led side, but if still 33 goals shy of Aiyebgeni record.

“I hope they will encourage this boy and give him a chance to show his potential in the national team.

“Sometimes he will play and not get the goals, hope they can still invite him because right now, he is one of the best strikers we have in the Nigerian team.”

Osimhen has been in fine form for League 1 side this season, scoring 13 goals in 27 appearances in 2019-20 campaign before the league suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.
