GuyTottenham manager, Jose Mourinho has backed Hugo Lloris despite his error that cost Totteham a victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday, but claimed the Frenchman is the “best goalkeeper in the Premier League”.
Spurs played out a 1-1 draw against the Eagles at Selhurst Park, with Jeffery Schlupp scoring an 81st-minute equaliser after Harry Kane had scored the opener 23 minutes into the game.
It was not a glaring error from Lloris. but he failed to hang onto Eberechi Eze’s free-kick in difficult conditions and Schlupp pounced to poke home and pinch a point for Palace.
Tottenham remained top of the table after picking up a point in south London but will be disappointed not to have secured all three after leading for over 45 minutes of the contest.
Though, when asked about Lloris’ performance, Mourinho refused to criticise him, in fact, he went in the complete opposite direction.
“My goalkeeper is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, the best in the Premier League period,’ Mourinho told a post-match press conference. ‘If I have to blame anyone it’s the team.
“I told the players at half-time the exact opposite of what we did in the second half but that’s because of what they couldn’t do.’
Mourinho also admitted that the Eagles were the better side for significant spells.
“We can look at it from two different perspectives,’ he said. ‘We had one more point than three hours ago but at the same time, you play to win three points.
“If I look to the game I would split the first half where the feeling is we have to win it, so we lost two points but then comes 30 minutes in the second half where they deserved to get the equaliser and you accept it because it’s fair. Then in the last 15 minutes we could have won it.”
