Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won at Pep Guardiola’s men in that time as well as whacking sorry Southampton 9-0 on home turf.

Manchester united also been impressive in their Europa league outing, cruising past 6-2 over Italian side Roma thanks to a stirring midweek Old Trafford effort.

Solskjaer can afford to go stronger than he might have done for the derby with a more intense squad, with only Anthony Martial and Phil Jones ruled out by injury.

Liverpool’s entire focus is on squeezing their way into the Premier League’s top four come, after their title defence bit the dust several months ago.

A disappointing Champions League quarter-final defeat to Real Madrid provided further unwanted quality for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have flagged under the toll over injury and expectation for large spells of an awkward campaign.

The Reds have at least put together five unbeaten games on the bounce as they try to keep their place at European continental football.

Well, keeping their place without joining a brand new European Super League to avoid all competition, anyway.

Back-to-back draws against Leeds and Newcastle coming into this one have kept the Merseyside club a point and a place below faltering West Ham in fifth.

Chelsea remain just out of reach, meanwhile, four points ahead in fourth spot.

The usual suspects of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are missing from the Reds’ defence, with Klopp also sweating over the availability of Nathaniel Phillips.

He will also be hoping to have rookie Curtis Jones ready for kick off after his return as far as the bench last week, while skipper Jordan Henderson continues his injury layoff.
