Manchester United are interested in signing Atalanta center back Cristian Romero with the Argentine on their three-man shortlist for this summer.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed an impressive 2020-21 season on loan at Juventus’ Atalanta, and the former is expected to take his option of signing him permanently for € 25m at the end of the campaign.

Also on United shortlist are Sevilla defender Jules Kounde and Sven Botman of Lille who have been identified as potential signings previously.

With Edinson Cavani committing to another season at Old Trafford, United are likely to focus on strengthening other areas of their side with a long-term partner for Harry Maguire thought to be a priority.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes bringing in a first-team option at the back will enable to club to make the step up next season.

“I think Manchester United’s prime position for them to strengthen, to really improve and become a team who can compete is center-back,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport after the 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Tuesday.
