Manchester United keen on £40m rated Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane

Manchester United are working on a plan for Real Madrid defender Raphael Raphael Varane with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prioritising the Frenchman over other targets such as Pau Torres and Sven Botman.

Varane has a year left on his current contract at the Bernabéu and has so far refused to extend his contract, with reports suggesting that Varane is interested in a new challenge after nearly a decade at Bernabéu.

Varane struggled under Carlo Ancelotti during his first spell at Madrid and this week the Italian’s return to the club was announced, casting doubt on the defender’s future.

Solskjaer is interested in signing a quick center-back partner for Harry Maguire and feels that Varane would fit the bill perfectly.

According to the Daily Mail, United is now actively working on a deal for Varane and thinks it can convince the defender to move to Old Trafford.

Solskjaer will receive a budget of around £150 million this summer, although he may have to rule out the likes of Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Diogo Dalot and Phil Jones before he can use his entire budget due to wage inflation from United.

In addition to Varane, Solskjaer hopes to sign Dortmund winger Sancho for around £80 million, meaning that 80% of his budget could go to the pair.
