Liverpool have set their eyes on Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni as one of their main defensive targets ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports in Italy.

Jurgen Klopp has been without first-choice duo of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for most of the season and Joel Matip’s lingering injury problems have added to the problems of the Premier League champions.

January signing Ben Davies was brought in from Preston but has yet to play a minute for Liverpool and with Ozan Kabak set to return to Schalke at the end of the season, the Merseyside giants have prioritized strengthening their defence.

The Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Bastoni, the 21-year-old Inter center midfielder, is firmly on Liverpool’s radar and Klopp’s list of potential options after a fantastic Serie A campaign.

It’s claimed the Reds have been keeping close tabs on Baston’s performances in recent months and would be prepared to cough up as much as £43million for the highly-rated Italy international.

Bastoni was signed by Inter for 31 million euros (26.5 million pounds) in 2017 and was immediately loaned to Atalanta for the 2017/18 season.

The center-back spent the following year on loan at Parma before returning to Inter last season to play a key role in Conte’s team.

Bastoni has won three caps for Italy after receiving the first senior team call-up last September and he is expected to be named in Roberto Mancini’s team for the European Championship this summer.
