Liverpool are close to sealing a deal for Red Bull Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

The Reds’ move for the center-back is said to be in an “advanced stage, according to Athletic, with Liverpool ready to pay the £34m release clause in the Frenchman’s contract.

That means Liverpool would not need to initiate talks with the Bundesliga club, although they may have to fight the interest of other parties to secure the defender’s signature.

Manchester United have been linked with Konate and at £34m, he’s seen as an attainable option for Europe’s elite.

Liverpool’s defensive record has suffered this season after the lengthy injuries suffered by Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

That has forced both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to be used as makeshift center-backs this season and Liverpool are strangers to finish in the top four as a result.

Klopp was forced to go on the market in January, signing Ben Davies from Preston and acquiring Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.

But Davies has yet to show up for the Reds, although it seems unlikely Liverpool will now take their option of signing Kabak to a permanent deal for a fee of around £18 million.
