Liverpool vs Burnley: Liverpool 68-game unbeaten home record shattered by Burnley

Mohammed Salah

Burnley stunned Liverpool as champions lose at home in the Premier League for the first time in nearly four years.

Liverpool’s hope of Surpassing Chelsea’s record of 86 unbeaten home games have gone up in smoke when they were beaten 1-0 by Burnley.

A late penalty from Ashley Barnes was all that was needed to separate the two sides, forcing Liverpool to be beaten at Anfield in the Premier League for the first time since April 2017.

The defending champions had to pay again for their poor finishing after leaving out-of-form Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino on the bench for an hour and it has now been seven hours and 18 minutes since they last scored in the Premier League.

It was a famous victory for Burnley, whose last victory in the field was in September 1974 thanks to Ian Brennan’s goal.

Last season, they were the only side to get a point at home over Liverpool when they raced to the title, and they ended the game with the same amount of possession – 29 percent – but crucially things went even better.

They used similar tactics: defending decisively, competing physically, and taking the opportunity.

The same couldn’t be said for Klopp’s side, who had 27 tries, but only six on target, and are now six points behind leader Manchester United.

With captain Jordan Henderson out with a minor groin problem and Salah and Firmino rested, the responsibility was placed on Divock Origi, and Oxlade- Chamberlain.

But,nLeither lived up to the billing and didn’t last the hour, although not before Origi missed the Red best night’s chance just before halftime.

with the game drifting, Klopp sent for Salah and Firmino, 10 minutes to the end of the game, with the former taking immediate action by forcing Pope to make his first decent save-low at the front post.

After spending most of the previous 83 minutes on the back foot, Burnley got the chance to deliver a shock to Anfield and they grabbed it.

Alisson took down Barnes and the Clarets forwards stepped up to score the only goal of the night.

A fifth win of the season took Burnley to 19 points, but confidence in the result will be just as important
