Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says the Reds need a striker to ease the burden on Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and believes Divock Origi is not at the level required for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Belgian international has proven to be a valuable member of the Reds’ supporting cast in previous seasons but has struggled for a place this season, with only eight Premier League appearances.

The arrival of Diogo Jota saw Origi’s role reduced, while Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino have continued to be cornerstones of Klopp’s side.

But having been without Jota since early December due to a knee injury, and Salah and Mane continue to score the vast majority of Liverpool goals, Anfield legend Carragher wants to see his former team beef up their attacking options in the next transfer window.

Liverpool definitely need to bring a goalscorer in,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Super 6 podcast

“I don’t know exactly what position for, whether that’s a centre-forward or a midfielder.

“At the moment they are massively reliant on Salah and Mane, nobody else looks like they’re going to score.

“Jota has been a miss, but whether Jota would ever be first choice in a Liverpool team – I’m not sure yet. He made a great start when he came in.

“They have Divock Origi but he’s nowhere near good enough. And he a lot of the time plays out wide, because he can’t play as a centre-forward.

“So Firmino plays that role but we always talk about him being a ‘false nine’, he’s not actually an out-and-out striker.

“I think Liverpool could do with bringing a striker in, just to shake things up and primarily someone who gets goals”
