Arsenal vs Manchester City: Ian Wright sends warning message to Arsenal ahead of Manchester City clash

Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta

Ian Wright has warned Arsenal that they can’t sit back well against teams and believes Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Emile Smith Rowe will be vital to unlocking Manchester City’s solid defense this weekend.

Mikel Arteta will face former mentor Pep Guardiola again when the Gunners host City on Sunday at the Emirates.

City, have conceded just 15 goals this season, secured their 12th straight Premier League win on Wednesday night as they beat Everton 3-1, taking them 10 points ahead of the second-placed team.

Arsenal bounced back from consecutive league losses after an impressive 4-2 win against Leeds last weekend, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring his first hat-trick in England’s top flight.

The Gabon international had a lot going for him, including Saka, Smith Rowe and Real Madrid, Dani Ceballos, and Martin Odegaard, all of whom helped enable a free-flowing Gunners attack.

Arteta’s side faces a formidable city and former Arsenal legend Wright has suggested that the squad should take a positive approach rather than sit low and allow too much possession to their dangerous opponents.

“[David] Luiz and Gabriel should start back because we have to get the ball through midfield to the three of them [Odegaard, Saka, and Smith Rowe],” Wright told Ringer FC’s podcast Wrighty’s House.

“It doesn’t make sense to me that we have the three of them and then play in a system where we don’t get them on the ball to get the ball to Aubameyang.

“We saw that Auba can cause them problems even though City are brilliant defensively at the moment.

“If we don’t try to get the ball through Ceballos and [Granit] Xhaka or whoever in Odegaard, Saka, and Emile Smith Rowe and then work their magic in that area, I can’t understand what will he [Arteta] do anything else besides waiting for them to come and beat us up and we’re not good at it.

“We should go there and take what we get in terms of these players’ positive attitudes. Saka, Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe play against them [City] and they impress them with their game.”
