- Diego Maradona’s football team Gimnasia is set to benefit from the decision to cancel the Argentine league as they will avoid relegation.
The president of Argentina Football Association(AFA) Claudio Tapia, announced that promotion of teams will go ahead, but no mention of which of the divisions.
The decision to cancel relegation for two seasons will take effect if the ruling is officially ratified on Tuesday according to SKY.
Argentina’s top league ended on the first weekend of March, with Gimnasia managed by Maradona being one of three bottom-placed teams.
While speaking to a local news channel he said ” we are ending the tournaments.
“The idea is to restart play but when authorities allow it and with maximum security.”
This decision means the normal routine of complicated calculations of points per game, taken over a period of three years will not be used this season and next.
Lockdown has been extended in Argentina till the second week of May, with an increase in the number of confirmed cases.
