Tim Sherwood has called Kai Havertz a “liability” and says Chelsea are “carrying” the £71 million summer contract.

Much was expected of German international Havertz after his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Bayer Leverkusen, where he scored 46 goals in 150 games and became the youngest player to reach 100 Bundesliga appearances.

But the 21-year-old has been very disappointing in the Premier League, scoring just once in 18 appearances and failing to cement a place in Chelsea’s starting eleven.

Havertz started Thomas Tuchel’s first game in command, a 0-0 draw with the Wolves last week, but was then left on the bench for Sunday’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Former Premier League manager Sherwood does not think Tuchel should play Havertz at the moment and described Chelsea’s summer signing as a “liability.”

He told Premier League Productions: “It is difficult to judge Tuchel after two games. The first game against the Wolves was boring, even though they had a lot of possession.

“They were better against Burnley and two of the full-backs scored, so he’s throwing them forward.

“I still think he has selection problems. I think they hired him to bring out the best in the German guys, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

“But at the moment you can’t play with Kai Havertz. In my opinion, he is a drag. He may be a good player in the future, but at the moment they just carry him.

“He wouldn’t play Havertz, but I think he might be under a little pressure to play Havertz and find a spot for Timo Werner.”

Chelsea are currently seventh in the Premier League, will face José Mourinho’s Tottenham on Thursday night.
