The former goalkeeper spent the last six years of his career at Old Trafford and is currently the CEO of Ajax, where he started and won the Champions League in 1995.

With Executive Vice President Ed Woodward stepping down at the end of the year, United will be looking for a successor, although van der Sar has not been contacted.

Speaking on EPSN Netherlands’ Goedemorgen Eredivisie,  Van der Sar said  “It’s nothing new for me, my name circulates there for a long time.”

He added on his future, with nothing being ruled out at this stage: “[With] the work and pressure, you should have a feeling with the club.

“I could do the things Ronald de Boer is doing – he works for us at Ajax and also here for you guys. He has more freedom than me, he has a good life.

“The pressure is different and I won’t work at a club where I don’t have a feeling. I could only do this for Ajax or United. I would not work for any other clubs.

Van der Sar became Ajax CEO in 2016. The 35-time Dutch champions have won two titles in that time, sealing their latest with a 4-0 win over FC Emmen on Sunday.

Meanwhile, over the weekend hundreds of United fans stormed the stadium calling for the Glazers to step down following their involvement in the collapsed European Super League, leading to the game with Liverpool being postponed
