Darwin Nunez reveals heartwarming words Salah said to him when he arrived at Anfield

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has revealed a heartwarming story about how Mohamed Salah helped him during his early days at Anfield.

The Uruguayan striker joined the Reds from Portuguese giants Benfica this summer. Liverpool paid an initial fee of £64 million for Nunez, with that fee potentially rising to a club-record £85m with add-ons.

The forward arrived with a growing reputation in football, having netted 24 goals in 26 appearances for Benfica in Liga Portugal last season.

Nunez won a trophy in his first game for the Reds – the Community Shield. He scored in the 3-1 win over Manchester City at the King Power Stadium, having joined the action from the bench.

The Uruguayan then scored and provided an assist, again off the bench, in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Fulham on the opening day of the Premier League season.

But, from then, things were not completely smooth for the forward. He was sent off in the Reds’ next game, a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Nunez headbutted Eagles defender Joachim Andersen.

Upon his return from the three-match ban, the 22-year-old failed to score in his next six Liverpool appearances.

But, Nunez ended his barren run with a goal in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal, before scoring the only goal in the Red’s 1-0 win over West Ham.

When he arrived in England in June, Nunez told Liverpool’s official website that his knowledge of English was ‘very bad’.

Furthermore, speaking after the West Ham win, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp explained how his new signing had felt ‘a little bit homesick’ during his early days in England.

But, speaking to ESPN, the 22-year-old has revealed how team-mate Salah gave him some heartwarming words of advice – based on the Egyptian’s own experiences of adapting to a new country.

Nunez explained: “Salah is an excellent player and an excellent person.

“When I arrived in pre-season, I was talking to him. We had Fabinho as a translator.

“In those first few games, I was very nervous. I had arrived without training, and things weren’t going my way.

“Then Mohamed called me to talk to me, he told me that I had to be calm because I was new, that I was adapting to the club. He told me that he also went through that moment, that when he arrived in 2017, he didn’t know English.

“He told me that I was going to learn it, to be calm now, to do what I did at Benfica, that my potential was important for the team.”

Nunez now looks to be finding his feet in English football. And his teammates appear to have played an important role in that.
