Arsenal chiefs  said they had not received an offer from Swedish billionaire Ek, while reiterating that they do not want to sell the club.

But Ek, was quick to respond to the allegations, insisting that the much-maligned Arsenal owners had received and turned down an offer this week.

He said in a statement: ‘This week an offer was made to both Josh Kroenke and their bankers that included ownership, representation at the board and a golden share for the supporters.

“They replied they don’t need the money. I respect their decision but remain interested and available should that situation ever change.”

Former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry had warned the club supporters that a potential takeover by Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek could take a “very long” time

“He approached us, we listened to him,” Henry told Sky Sports.

“When we knew first and foremost that he wanted to involve the fans we actually met the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust and told them what we wanted to do bring them back on board.

“He wants to reinject the Arsenal DNA, the identity that is long gone.

“You don’t have Arsenal people there among the board that can sometimes show the right direction and that is what Daniel wants to do”
