Barcelona star Suarez joins Atletico Madrid on a free transfer

Luis Suarez set to join Juventus

Atletico Madrid have signed Barcelona and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez on a two-year deal as they look to strengthen their attack.

Suarez, 33 is expected to depart Camp Nou on Thursday after a farewell conference as confirmed by the Spanish giants.

The former Liverpool striker will join Diego Simeone side on a free transfer, but Barcelona are expected to make up to £6m in related performance bounces.

Simeone is understood to have pushed for the deal to sign Suarez after the departure of Alvaro Morata to Juventus. The deal is subject to medical according to Atletico Madrid.

Suarez will leave Nou Camp with head held high finishing as the third-highest goal scorer in the history of Barca with 198 goals in all competitions, was deemed surplus to requirement by Barca new coach Ronald Koeman.

He has joined a long list of players who have departed the Camp Nou amid the rebuilding process of Barcelona including Ivan Rakitic to sevilla, Selmendo to Wolves, Arturo Vidal to Inter Milan

Juventus were in the forefront to sign the Uruguayan, only after he had passed a language test in order to obtain Italian citizenship.

However, the test is under investigation by prosecutors according to Italian media amid irregularities. Suarez is not under investigation.

Suarez departs Barcelona six years after joining the Catalan club on a deal worth £75m from Liverpool winning 14 trophies including a champions league title and four la Liga titles.
