The Argentine International had been said to reunite with his former Manager Pep Gaurdiola at Manchester City.

However, the deal didn’t materialise as former president Josep Maria insisted his €700m release clause be meet before his departure.

Messi  wages is causing a strain on Barcelona at the moment with his £54million-a-year salary, and Interim President Carles Tusquets has disclosed he would have sold him if he was in charge as at that time.

“Economically speaking, I would’ve sold Messi in the summer window,” Tusquets told RAC1 radio station.

“Both in terms of what you save on the wage bill as well as the money you make, it would’ve been desirable. But this is something the coaching staff have to consent to and that’s not my place.
