Atletico Madrid crowned La Liga champions after 2-1 victory over Valladolid 1 Sportelo

Atlético de Madrid have won La Liga for the eleventh time thanks to a 2-1 victory over Valladolid on Saturday.

Goals from Ángel Correa and Luis Suárez gave Diego Simeone’s men all three points making Real Madrid’s 2-1 against Villarreal irrelevant.

Atleti finished the season with 86 points, allowing them to win their first title since the 2013/14 season.

Meanwhile,Barcelona  finished in a distant third place after a 1-0 win over Eibar.

The title race has gone front and back like no other in recent years. Madrid and Barcelona got off to slow starts, but Atleti quickly came out of the blocks and moved to the top of the standings after Matchday 9.

Simeone saw his team lose to Real Madrid in mid-December, which was their first loss of the season, but they kept their strong form until February, at which point they began to stutter.

A four-game win streak in 11 games saw the Clasico teams catch them and even revise them for a period. However, having slipped to third place in the standings, Atleti crushed Eibar 5-0 at home when Real Madrid draw against Getafe and Barcelona were defeated 2-1 by Granada.

Atleti were now back to the summit of the standings, and would finish the season strong, dropping only two points in their final six games (a 0-0 draw away to Barcelona).

Their mentality was tested throughout this period, though, as they clung on under pressure from Real Sociedad in a 2-1 victory before coming from behind to beat Osasuna by the same scoreline a week later. Lodi and Luis Suarez struck in the final eight minutes of that latter match to secure a dramatic victory.

Indeed, Suarez, a player they signed from Barcelona last summer, proved to be the pivotal player in the title race, smashing the 20-goal barrier to net nearly a third of Atleti’s goals.
