Arsenal could offer David Luiz the opportunity to be part of Mikel Arteta’s backroom when they sit down to discuss a new deal with the Brazilian.

The defender’s current contract expires at the end of the season and while Arteta cannot guarantee Luiz will remain a regular at Emirates, he values the experience the former Chelsea ace brings to his team in North London.

With William Saliba set to return to the club next summer and Arteta looking for another center-back, the Gunners are well equipped at the back and Luiz looked likely to leave.

But, Football London claims that Luiz will be granted a 12-month extension if he is willing to accept reduced playing time at the Emirates.

It is claimed that Luiz could therefore be offered a hybrid role as a player/coach, which would keep him in his place in the Arsenal team, but also as part of Arteta’s backroom staff.

The Spaniard believes Luiz has a lot to offer his young team and says his leadership skills are valuable.

He’s a great example for them (the youngsters),’ said Arteta.

‘He’s got a good mixture with them between some banter and then some stick.

“They all listen to him because of who he is and what he’s done in the game. But also because of how he behaves every day, how professional he is, and how he goes about the job. He is one of the key role models that we have in our team.”

Arteta can draw from Luiz’s experience as Arsenal face Benfica in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday.
