Lionel Messi named player of the decade ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo

Barcelona SuperStar Lionel Messi has beaten longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo to be named Player of the Decade.


The Argentine star prevailed over the Portuguese icon in the vote for the best soccer player between 2011 and 2020 in a ranking of the IFFHS- International Federation of Football History and Statistics, according to Diario AS.

Both players dominated player awards throughout the decade and led their teams to multiple titles in that period: Messi won six league titles, two Champions League crowns, and five national cup titles, while Ronaldo’s teams have won four league crowns, four Champions Leagues, and two League Cups.

Ronaldo and Messi have shared eight Ballon d’Or titles between them, with each having won four in the period in review.

Messi’s future has been at the center of Barcelona news in recent weeks; He has scored 651 goals in 757 appearances for the club.


Ronaldo scored a remarkable club record of 450 goals in 438 appearances for Los Blancos between 2009 and 2018 and has 88 goals in 113 appearances for Juventus.


He has scored 764 senior goals throughout his entire career and it looks like he will continue this trajectory for several seasons.
